The displacement-to-length ratio, explained: light, moderate or heavy
Ask a broker whether a boat is a heavy cruiser or a light flyer and you will get an adjective. The D/L ratio is the number behind the adjective, and it appears on the spec page of nearly every production sailboat ever built. Read on for what it measures, how the weight classes work, and where the number quietly misleads.

What is the displacement-to-length ratio?
D/L divides a boat's displacement in long tons by one one-hundredth of her waterline length in feet, cubed. Because weight grows with volume and the length term is cubed to match, the result is dimensionless: it stays comparable whether the boat is 28 feet or 45.
D/L = ( Displacement (lb) ÷ 2240 ) ÷ ( 0.01 × LWL (ft) )³That size-independence is the whole point of the formula. Raw displacement tells you a 45-footer weighs more than a 28-footer, which is useless. D/L tells you which of the two carries more boat per foot of waterline, which is the start of a real comparison.
Naval architects sometimes describe it as immersed volume per unit of length: how tubby the hull is below the waterline, as Cruising World puts it. A slim, shallow underbody produces a low number. A deep, full-bodied hull produces a high one.
What counts as light, moderate or heavy?
Under 100 is ultralight (the ULDB class), 100 to 200 light, 200 to 275 moderate, and 275 to 350 a heavy cruiser. Above 350 sits the very heavy, traditional end: full-keel designs and workboat-derived hulls. Most fiberglass cruisers from the 1970s through the 1990s land between 250 and 350.

Treat the boundaries as soft. Ratio primers from Good Old Boat and the summary on Wikipedia draw the lines in slightly different places, and designers argue about them constantly. What matters is the band, not whether a boat scores 268 or 281.
What does the D/L ratio actually predict?
Four things: speed potential per foot, load-carrying ability, motion at sea, and how hard the boat must be driven. Low D/L means less water to push aside and a higher speed ceiling. High D/L means the boat swallows cruising payload without sinking her lines, at the cost of needing more sail to move.
The load-carrying point is the one buyers underrate. A heavy 36-footer can absorb a ton of water, fuel, tools and provisions and barely notice. Put the same ton aboard an ultralight and you have changed her trim, her handling and her effective D/L.
D/L also hints at motion and interior volume, though neither on its own. Pair it with the comfort ratio to read how the boat will feel in a seaway, and with the sail area to displacement ratio to see whether the rig is big enough to drive all that hull. The three together sketch a boat's character better than any one alone.
Why do modern boats read so much lighter?
Production boats have shed weight for decades while their waterlines have stretched to nearly the full hull length. A 1980 cruiser publishing D/L 320 was completely normal; a 2020 design of the same length might publish 130. Neither number is wrong, they simply belong to different eras.
Cored laminates, lighter interiors and plumb bows all push the ratio down. Because LWL is cubed in the denominator, the long waterlines of modern designs cut the score dramatically even at identical weight. So always compare a candidate against boats of her own generation, not against the whole market.
There is a second trap: published displacement is light-ship, the boat empty as delivered. As Charles Doane's Wave Train primer demonstrates, real cruising trim adds serious weight: his worked example gains 21 percent with light cruising gear and over 30 percent loaded for bluewater, moving the boat's D/L from 244 to 320. Every spec sheet therefore flatters the boat, and the flattery is largest on the lightest designs.
What the D/L ratio does not tell you
It says nothing about build quality, and nothing about condition. A heavy 1978 cruiser with a tired rig, original seacocks and wet decks is not a safer buy than a light 2015 boat that has been maintained; she is just heavier. The ratio describes the design as drawn, not the boat in the ad.
It also inherits every weakness of its inputs. Light-ship displacement flatters all boats, manufacturers measure LWL inconsistently, and modern long-waterline hulls make the old band labels drift lighter over time. What is a good displacement to length ratio?+
There is no single good number, only a good fit. For coastal weekending and club racing, 100 to 200 gives lively performance. For extended cruising with real payload, 200 to 350 buys load-carrying ability and an easier motion. Match the band to how you plan to use the boat, then compare within the boat's design era.
Is a heavier sailboat better for cruising?+
Often, but not automatically. A higher D/L means the hull can absorb water, fuel, provisions and gear without sinking noticeably below her lines, and it usually pairs with a steadier motion at sea. The price is slower passages in light air and more sail area needed to drive the boat. Heavy also says nothing about build quality or condition.

Yes. Published figures use light-ship displacement, the boat as she left the factory. Full cruising trim commonly adds 15 to 30 percent on a mid-size cruiser, which raises the real D/L and matters most on light designs, where the extra weight is a bigger share of the total.
